Ballas Pelecanos Law has contributed the Greece chapter to Lexing Insights n°49/2026, “Knowing the Regulation of Social Media”.
Lexing® is the first international network of lawyers dedicated to digital and emerging law, bringing together leading firms across more than 40 jurisdictions. As the Greek member of the Lexing network, Ballas Pelecanos Law provides insight into the EU and national rules governing social media activity in Greece.
The Greece chapter, prepared by Senior & Managing Partner, George Ballas, and Senior Associate, Nikolaos Papadopoulos, explains how social media regulation in Greece draws on several interconnected legal frameworks, including the Digital Services Act, audiovisual media legislation, advertising rules and consumer protection law.
The chapter examines, among other matters:
- The reporting, transparency and complaint-handling obligations imposed on platforms under the Digital Services Act.
- The additional duties applicable to very large online platforms, particularly in relation to systemic risks and the protection of minors.
- Safeguards for minors accessing video-sharing platforms, including age-verification systems and parental controls.
- The prohibition of dark patterns and restrictions on profiling-based advertising using sensitive data or targeting minors.
- Disclosure requirements for influencers, advertisers and other commercial relationships.
- Additional advertising restrictions applying to regulated sectors, including tobacco, gambling and medicinal product
The publication brings together contributions from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, India, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States, offering a comparative view of the evolving regulation of social media worldwide.
